UPDATED PHOTOS: Belgium’s Médiacité Shopping Mall Complete

The Médiacité in Liège ^[6] shopping mall opened last October of 2009 in Belgium, and new photos of the naturally daylit mall and entertainment center have just been released. Located a short distance from Santiago Calatrava's high speed rail station ^[7] in the heart of the city, the new multi-use facility has revitalized the former industrial area into a community pole. The exciting new urban infill project is the first shopping and leisure center in Europe to be awarded the “Very Good” mark under the New BREEAM Retail 2008 protocol, and is the first BREEAM certified project in Belgium.

London-based Israeli architect, Ron Arad ^[9], with the help of Jaspers Eyers, designed the roof of the mall along with the facade, mall interior and external piazzas. A long 350-meter, winding daylit spine connects and unites the two mall buildings together. The spine is constructed from a complex network of steel roof ribs that undulate and arch over the mall’s main pathway. Covered in lightweight ETFE pillows ^[10], the mall’s spine is naturally daylit through a translucent material. At the end of the building, the roof curves down and transforms into the facade of the building, which serves as a rain screen.

Médiacité ^[11] in Liège was the first project in Belgium to be awarded with BREEAM certification, and in addition to natural daylighting ^[12], includes rainwater collection from the roof, waste management and sorting, roof mounted air treatment stations for improved air quality and strong attention to energy efficiency.
