What a crock!
Initially I perceived this competition as a way to implement valid sustainable materials and renewable energy sources. Digging deeper I realized that this is, as they say, like putting lipstick on a pig. After taking a look at the "Photo Gallery" and reading the "Evaluation Criteria" it seems that besides a few small engineering tweaks, there isn't much that needs to be done to the current design (paint it!!) I read that in mid-Manhattan alone there are about 26 miles of sidewalk that are enclosed by approximately 67 sidewalk sheds. As unappealing as the common shed construction may be, it serves its purpose extremely well. If there is a better solution to the current scaffold like construction, wont we be wasting millions even billions of dollars in resources by making the switch to the new design, which will inevitably be vandalized by posters, stickers and krink, just to end up being thrown into the back of a truck to be taken away beaten and battered. Again Bloomberg focusing energy and throwing money at unnecessary issues.
