Renewable energy [2] is on the rise in the US as new solar projects [3] pop up across the country and thousands of new wind turbines [4] are built every year. According to a recent report from the American Wind Energy Association [5], wind energy [6] grew 28-percent in the US during 2012 – and it now accounts for 42-percent of all new US electricity generating capacity. Over 6,700 wind turbines were built across the US in 2012, bringing the nation’s total up to 45,100. That’s enough wind energy to power over 15 million homes, according to the AWEA.

The wind industry’s success over the past year has actually helped contribute to the uptick in the entire US economy. But wind power isn’t just about providing green energy; it also helped to alleviate drought conditions [8] in the US by saving 35-billion gallons of water that would have otherwise gone to generating energy. On top of that, wind energy contributed to over 80,000 jobs in the US.

“We had an incredibly productive year in 2012, it really showed what this industry can do and the impact we can have with a continued national commitment to renewable energy. We’re doing what Americans overwhelmingly say they want: making more clean, renewable energy, and creating good jobs in U.S. factories,” said Rob Gramlich, CEO of AWEA.
