While an "array" of V3's Spin Cell's can occupy a very small space, relative to conventional flat panels, V3 has also conceived of a "Power Pole," to support even greater even solar power generation in a small space, the designers explain "This is a pole that holds 10 Spin Cells, or 10KWp, in a footprint of 10 SF. The spin cells are placed with mathematical precision to make sure no Spin Cell shades another. This not only creates significantly great power density, but also removes the concern of floods and mitigates the environmental impact."

The V3 Spin Cell was developed through collaboration with industrial design team Nectar Design. The company believes that the Spin Cell could be a game-changer in its market. On their website V3 explains that if one places a 20x solar concentration on a flat, static solar panel then “the temperature quickly reaches 260 degrees F, the solder melts within ten seconds, and the PV fails. With the same concentration on the Spin Cell, the temperature never exceeds 95 degrees F.”

The one meter-diameter cones feature a layer of hundreds of triangular photovoltaic cells positioned at an angle of 56 degrees, encased in a “static hermetically-sealed outer lens concentrator.” The photovoltaic cone spins with the assistance of a “small amount” of its own solar-generated power which feeds a Maglev system, intended to reduce the noise generated by the cones as well as any required maintenance.

Additionally, V3 hopes that with the dramatically reduced physical footprint of the solar cones, they might be able to “dramatically reduce the [total cost of ownership of solar farms] making more projects economically viable.” See one of the Spin Cones in action here.

    At first glance, there is some merit to this design but I see some big problems that have not been addressed in the images or text:
    1. Heat dissipation: If it has 20x solar concentration focused inside a hermetically sealed cone the temperature will rise, this will counteract their lower cell temperature efficiency claims. They also claim it will stay below 35C, this is impossible, as they have practically built a solar thermal collector. Solar thermal collectors can easily reach 100C even on cloudy cold days.

    2. Collector area: As the system is cone shaped, and is placed upright (as per pictures) only half of the system can receive direct beam sunlight (~0.4m). The lens featured in the pictures has a slightly larger surface area to the actual solar cells, therefore, it is impossible to collect 20x solar concentration, and even if it could, it would only be to half the cells, at an angle. Considering that PV efficiency is strongly related to incident angle, the cone shape would work against efficiency.

    I estimate on a good day this system would produce a maximum power output of 80W, where as a standard 0.8m solar panel could produce 160W. In terms of energy, it would probably generate 60-80% less than a standard system.

    This is a fraud, people. You can’t get better wattage conversion with anything like this, this is an outright fraud. I see that these filthy crooks are trying to get dimwitted suckers to hand them their money for fake “investment” — typical right wing fraud.

    The claim is very unlikely to be true. PV cells are about 12% to 17% energy efficient: it is silly to claim spinning and cooling PV cells will make them 240% energy efficient. Also, -p p silicon trapping is improved by cooling, but only by a percentage or two: like charges repell. I\\\’ve very sorry to point this out, but the claims made for this product would mean magic happens.

    This is a great idea, I just find the rendered images a little bizarre. They are shown as being on the streets, perhaps to show them with people in society, but I would envision them more as something that would cover every possible rooftop in town, to maximize exposure.

    Oh, and 20x is a huge stretch, maybe 5-10x. Cause 20x with the same panels is to say they only get 5% of possible energy.

    I also have taken interest in it. Very nice design, though I would think with all the concentrators and rotating magnets you’d want to shell out for some double or triple junction cell at least. Also an exhaust system for waste heat for thermal or motive power would be a nice idea.
