Gallery: Vancouver Soccer Stadium Made With 22,000 Recycled Tires

With global soccer fever still high, here’s another amazing soccer stadium that boasts some remarkable green features. The recently completed Empire Field Stadium in Vancouver is made with 22,000 recycled tires, amounting to 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber! The stadium, which will host the BC Lions football team (American football) and the Vancouver Whitecaps Soccer team, utilizes the crumb rubber under the artificial turf, which provides a number of benefits for the players and the environment.

    Also interesting about the Vancouver Whitecaps is their Greenzone Sustainability Kick. The Supply Chain, Vendors and fans have been brought together so Waste from the games is diverted to Compost or Recycling (and Bottle Refund).

    I think they meant American football to distinguish it from European football (i.e. soccer).

    More to the point – went to a game in this stadium last weekend and had a seat with a stunning view of the mountains. was pretty amazing.

    Canadian football has been played for a few generations now. BC Lions since 1951. Other CFL teams including Winnipeg (80 years) and Saskatchewan (100 years) much longer. We’ve been playing Canadian football of some form since 1861.
