The ill-fated Foster + Parnters [2]-designed Harmon Hotel in Las Vegas [3] will finally meet its demise as a court ruled for its destruction. The glassy would-be hotel and condominiums began construction in 2006, but its interiors were never finished. The MGM Resorts International owned property was granted permission to tear down the 27-floor glass tower last month, due to faulty construction [4].

The massive $8.5 million casino and hotel complex [6] was slated to open in 2011 and it would have included 400 hotel rooms and 207 condominium residences. The Harmon was supposed to soar to 49 floors, being a premier residence and hotel right on the Las Vegas Strip. The blue glass exterior was nearly complete, but construction was suddenly halted in late 2008 when inspectors discovered severe construction defects, including improper installation of critical steel reinforcements.

The Harmon remained stoic and unchanged for five years as owners MGM Resorts International [8] and developers Tutor Perini fought over who was responsible for the faulty construction, which was deemed a potential risk during earthquakes. While the blame has yet to be placed, Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez has ordered for the building’s demolition.

Rather than imploding the structure as suggested by MGM, the hotel will be deconstructed floor by floor, a tedious but safer task. We hope that the materials will be reused in a newer project.
