We can’t say enough about the benefits of a compact living space. It’s an instant clutter eliminator, a life-size jigsaw puzzle, and a laboratory for experiments in feng shui. But the best thing about compact living? The multi-functional furniture.
The radically imaginative Vestal Design has created one for the books. Their DoubleSpace Kitchenette goes from armchair to stovetop in a matter of moments.
Pointing out that you will probably never cook while seated, Vestal proves that two mutually exclusive domestic activities pair excellently in a single piece of furniture. The melamine countertop and dual electric burners stow safely beneath the cushioned seat until you need them. You can roll the unit around your space as much as you want, constantly rearranging the layout of your little home.
Vestal characterize themselves as a “product ideation foundation” creating “disruptive solutions.” This is just the kind of disruption we’re looking for: outrageous design fusion for highly functional spaces. More, please!
It’s an interesting idea for sure…
I worry that the seat would get dirty very fast however, from spills and whatnot.
Perhaps I’m wrong…
Mixing melamine and a burning stovetop sounds pretty dangerous. If you are this desperate for space why not just get a camping stovetop?
Where do you sit while you wait for your food to cook?
Thanks for a most entertaining post. This is a hilarious and wonderfully creative idea! LMOH
[...] It’s been a while since we talked about compact habitats, but it’s one of our favorite topics. Efficient use of space is the best way to maximize your living quarters. It helps you conserve resources, keep your life organized, and enjoy clutter-free surroundings. Bonbon Trading’s got compact down pat with their Doc sofa/bunk bed unit. The single couch swings easily into two separate spots for resting your weary head. That’s smart furniture. Bonbon’s materials are not quite as smart as their designs. Though ease of use and economy of space bode well for an efficient lifestyle, Bonbon might do well to adopt some more sustainable materials. We certainly hope green thinking infuses Bonbon, because their modern rendition of the classic Murphy bed — and new incarnations of the “wall bad” style — are downright brilliant. Add a Convertible Kitchenette from Vestal Design and a Living Unit by Andrea Zittel, and you could break records for spatial efficiency. [...]
that’s an idea for RVs and boats as well!
