The Lotte Jeju Resort in South Korea is a new luxury development comprised of five blocks of housing units - each of which is designed by a different "starchitect." Kengo Kuma contributed his unique vision to Block D of the Art Villas with a series of curved condos topped with locally-sourced volcanic rock that references the 368 volcanoes scattered throughout Jeju Islands.
Very little information has been released about the design of Kengo Kuma’s Block D condos, but this is what we do know. The curved units come in two different sizes – 210 and 245 square meters – that each boast beautiful latticed roof work and deep overhangs to mitigate solar gain. Floor to ceiling glass windows permit an abundance of natural light and wood floors emphasize the site’s unique natural connection.
“A unique beauty found nowhere else in the world,” Kuma said in a statement. The beauty of Jeju’s strong yet flexible nature is perfectly filled inside the round roofs.” Seung H-Sang, Dominique Perrault, Yi Jongho are among the other designers that contributed condo blocks to the Art Villas, which are leased out for seven years, after which all money is returned!
