Volkswagen just confirmed plans to produce its XL1 plug-in hybrid – which gets an astounding 261 miles per gallon! When it is officially unveiled at the upcoming 2013 Geneva Motor Show the XL1 will be the most fuel-efficient production car in the world with a fuel consumption of only 0.9 l / 100 km (261 mpg).

The XL1 is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that combines a 47 horsepower two-cylinder diesel TDI engine with a 27 horsepower electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. According to VW the XL1 reaches 0-62 mph in 12.7 seconds and can travel up to 31 miles in full electric mode.

The two-passenger XL1 measures 3,888 mm long, 1,665 mm wide and just 1,153 mm high. It also only weighs 1,753 pounds. Volkswagen will build the XL1 at its Osnabrueck factory in Germany, but it has not yet announced pricing for the hypermiling vehicle.
