Volkswagen Introduces Temporary Auto Pilot System for Accident-Free Driving

We have seen several green concept cars lately that explore the idea of automatic driving for a safer or more efficient commute. Now, Volkswagen is putting the idea to the test in the real world. At the final presentation of the EU research project HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport) in the Swedish city of Bords, Executive Director of Volkswagen Group Research Professor Dr. Jürgen Leohold presented the Temporary Auto Pilot system by Volkswagen. While monitored by the driver, Volkswagen’s TAP system can drive the car up to 80 miles per hour. Volkswagen hopes the system will represent the link between today’s assistance systems and tomorrow’s fully automated green cars .
“Above all, what we have achieved today is an important milestone on the path towards accident-free car driving,” said Leohold at the presentation. According to Volkswagen, “TAP maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, drives at a speed selected by the driver, reduces this speed as necessary before a bend, and maintains the vehicle’s central position with respect to lane markers. The system also observes overtaking rules and speed limits. Stop and start driving manoeuvres in traffic jams are also automated.” What do you think of automated driving tech? Is it part of our sustainable future or does it encourage distracted driving? Let us know in the comments.
