Volvo’s New Car Goes From All-Electric to Hybrid or Diesel With the Push of a Button

Not sure whether you want to drive an all-electric car, a hybrid or a powerful sports car? Well, now you can do it all the with Volvo ‘s new diesel plug-in hybrid, a new design based on their V60 estate. The car will be on display at the upcoming Geneva motor show, and from what we can tell , it will be the first vehicle of its kind.
A touch of a button lets you switch between three modes – “pure”, “power” and “hybrid” – depending on what you’re in the mood for. If you want a longer range, the “hybrid” mode pushes the car for a range of up to 746 miles, the “power” mode allows the V60′s two engines to go from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds, and on the “pure” electric mode the car can travel up to 32 miles.
A diesel engine drives the front wheels of the car, while a 70 horsepower electric motor powered by a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery drives the rear wheels. The diesel engine can produce up to 215 horsepower, and the company claims the car only has CO2 emissions of only 49g/km because of its hybrid drive-train.
The new Volvo will go into production in 2012, but it is not clear when it will hit U.S. markets.
