Now that Barbie has taken on the profession of architecture, it’s about time for her dream house to receive a sustainable makeover. Thankfully, four out of the five finalists in AIA’s Architect Barbie Dream House Competition have very specific sustainable aspects incorporated into their design. While we are a bit confused as to why giraffes made it into two of the finalist homes, it’s fun to read the accompanying design statements for each home – one of which explains that “there’s more to Barbie than her love of fashion, and her home should reflect that complexity: fun and stylish, yet technologically sophisticated and environmentally conscious.”

Another design for Barbie’s new Malibu Home is not only a hip residence, but an educational tool that helps teach young Barbie fans about sustainable design by incorporating green materials and technologies throughout the house. Several of the proposals insisted that Barbie was not merely on architect, but also a LEED AP and would inevitably design her space to be sustainable. Go cast your vote for your favorite design before August 1st, and the winner will be announced on August 2nd!

I’m with caeman. Reality check: one in five American children live in poverty and one in forty-five are homeless. This “Malibu Dream House” competition shows a huge disconnect with the reality of children’s lives today. I’d much prefer to see her dollhouse be an average home that is designed beautifully, sustainably and at a reasonable cost. Great design should be accessible to all, not just the rich and famous. Most girls live and play in much less ritzy digs. That would certainly go more along with the vision of the original Barbie house design, which was purposefully nothing like a penthouse apartment or McMansion. While you’re at it, how about making Barbie and her “life” more realistic? She is nothing like a real woman, and not everybody wants their children to spend their playtime in the shallow fantasy-land of acquisition of fame and fortune that Barbie’s “life” has become. I realize this reflects our society’s sick obsessions, but there are really much more important and beautiful things in life out there. How about designing that?

Can I vote no based purely on the false image that Barbie impresses upon young girls that doesn’t exist in the real world?
