Gallery: We Are You Unveils Sweeping Green Cycling Center for Gothenbur...

We Are You and Erik Hallberg have designed a cycling center that they hope will help to "Copenhagenize" Gothenburg. Copenhagenizing a city means to transform it from one that relies mostly on cars to one that instead prioritizes bicycles, but getting to that point takes time. The designers hope that this new Velodrome designed for Slottskogen - the site of Sweden's very first cycling competition - will catalyze the process.

All manner of cyclists exist in Sweden including commuters and athletes, but there are few spaces for them to gather and coalesce. Creating such an environment will have the double effect of uniting cyclists and raising their profile in the general public. This in turn, it is hoped, will help to encourage other urban dwellers to take up cycling and reduce the city’s overall carbon footprint.

The center itself is comprised of a velodrome constructed on a steep hill that allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross underneath. There is plenty of space for other activities, allowing for interaction between cyclists and non-cyclists, and a tensile cover that provides shelter from the rain in one of Sweden’s wettest cities in Sweden will be erected separately from the track. Despite having a tiny footprint, the cycling center is expected to have a huge impact on the community’s attitude towards bicycles in general.
