I am interning at the United States Green Building Council as well as for an Eco Consultancy in Los Angeles. I am looking for career opportunities and what I can do to enhance my sustainable lifestyle further. The future is sustainable building and I would love the opportunity to learn more at this event!

My journalistic experience was founded upon a summer internship with VICE magazine and later as a copy editor for the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada’s Roots & Shoots magazine. Since then, my writing has been limited to short stories and the upkeep of a personal, and for the most part irreverent, blog. A sample of which can be found here: Whomunculus.

I am currently compiling a portfolio for entrance to a landscape architecture program. Beyond that intention, my exposure to green innovations has been mostly determined by blog-lurking, a handful of urban planning classes and weekly forays to the local library: Admittedly, I am green in a many senses of the word. However, though I have taken the less-prestigious route of the autodidact, I think that this attribute would be beneficial to this specific task, for I do not carry partisanship and I find myself ever-thirsty to know more.

My interests in ecological awareness are too numerous to list with any degree of concision, but they range from the visceral phenomena of human well-being and aesthetics to the intellectual dialectics of eco-psychology, emergent properties of systems, deep ecology and liminal spaces (my favourite). In sum, I am simply in awe of how we as a species influence the way our environment influences us.

1. By day I’m a principal at Big Fig Design Group [ http://www.bigfigdesigngroup.com ] and an editor at the blog (incli)NATION [http://www.incli-nation.com ]. By night I’m a writer, photographer, and filmmaker [ http://danielflahiff.net ]. My work has been exhibited at independent venues in New York, Los Angeles, and a few places internationally.
2. Right now, I’m interested in the paradoxes in and around the production of small buildings as found in a spectrum of environments; from labor and refugee camps, to 19th-century, North American cabins, to virtual structures built for online media. [I could go on and on about this, but I'll save that for another time...]
3. Prior to completing my MFA at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, I studied economics and business administration at Pacific Lutheran University. As a student, I was fortunate enough to receive a grant to spend a year in Florence, Italy studying the guild systems of the late Renaissance. I currently live and work in Seattle and Los Angeles.

Too much? Maybe, but why hold back when opportunity knocks? And this is one great opportunity. In addition to the headliners like Al Gore and Sarah Susanka, here are some reasons I’d love to cover West Coast Green for Inhabitat:

1. Chris Waugh and Steve Bishop of the always-fabulous IDEO will discuss ‘Demand Side Sustainability’ and ‘The Myth of Sisyphus…’
2. Sarah Susanka will speak about ‘Updating Plato’
3. Jeff Oberdorfer will report on ‘LEED Affordable Multi-family Housing’
4. David Delgado will go out on a limb with [and I love this one!] ‘Designing for a Mars Community’

In the end I think my passion for green design, from product to architecture to community, in addition to my cross-disciplinary perspective as designer, artist, filmmaker and writer make me an ideal choice for correspondent for Inhabitat.

And did I mention that I really want to go?

Bonded Logic — blue jeans are green and all, but are harder to cut, and dustier than fiberglass, & consequently more labor. Vetrazzo — handle carefully, because those slabs are so very delicate and expensive. Quartz might be more competitive. Low VOC paints — buyer beware, as they might not apply well. Balancing the real world with the ideal — that’s the perspective I’ll bring.

I am a project manager at a construction firm in New York City. Our firm is constantly trying to stay on top of green perspectives and environmentally fit solutions for building, especially since New York is rapidly moving towards becoming more sustainable. Writing and architectural photography are two things that help me stay in touch with what is going on elsewhere in the world, whether it’s for our press releases, posting on blogs, or for my own enjoyment!

I’d be thrilled to go to California to learn about the most innovative green solutions, and even more excited to bring the knowledge that I gain back to New York to share with everyone!
