Amazon India has opened a store devoted to solar-powered products. The Indian government has announced a variety of initiatives to increase its share of renewable energy, including plans to install 33.4 gigawatts of solar energy by 2022. While the bulk of solar capacity will be derived from utility-scale plants, home solar has a role to play. At least, that’s what the online merchant seems to be banking on.
An ongoing heat wave has killed more than 2,300 people in India, highlighting the very real and present danger of increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. That combined with high energy prices make solar energy increasingly viable in a country with 1.25 billion potential clients.
“We understand that consumer mindset towards energy efficiency and carbon footprint is undergoing a positive change. We witness this everyday on Amazon.in as more and more customers today prefer to purchase products that are eco-friendly,” said Samir Kumar, director of category management. “Our new Solar Power store offers customers across India an easy and convenient access to a wide range of eco- friendly and energy saving products that they can get delivered at their doorstep in a fast and reliable manner.”
The store offers a variety of solar-powered products, including kits that would allow people to take their own homes off the grid. These require a hefty investment, though, but solar-powered lanterns are relatively cheap and easily deployed by anyone who has only a rudimentary understanding of how the clean technology works.
Amazon claims they now offer the widest selection of solar-powered products in the country.
