Anyone who knows me knows I hate waste. When I took my position at work, the first thing I did was reduce paper usage by more than 70% by converting everything to digital forms and files. Each week my recycling bin goes to the curb while my garbage bin goes out every three weeks. I made my backyard deck out of pallets and other free materials found on craigslist. I'm the queen of reuse!!! I would love to reuse this chandelier!!

This would look AMAZING in our cob/straw bale home that we are building. The home features a lofted area and the south-facing wall will be just over 15 feet tall. While we'll have a living roof that will keep the slope of the roof fairly low we will still have a challenge finding the right lighting feature to hang over the table that will sit near the south facing wall. A signature piece like this would be incredible!

Even if we don't win I might share this with the folks at Assemble (a local arts collective) that pulls things from the waste stream and see if together we could make me something as awesome as this!

I love the chandelier, it proves you can turn trash into treasure. Spreading the message to guests of everything's possibility to be renewed.

I am a designer and I have been doing my house up the last few years with furniture I have got from freecycle or charity shops. I have just taken out a loan to add a conservatory as it will be a great studio will the most natural light I could hope to get with our being outside. (I live in Wales so there’s always chance of rain)

I thought I'd get a chandelier which I could do up but I didn't want anything that would clash with the modern look I was going for. So I did a Google search and there was the most perfect chandelier. Modern, made of recycled materials and that quirky design edge I always try and incorporate in my own projects. Love it :)

Storytelling. The more I can relate to your story, the more you feel inclined to exchange your story. And even though I don't "know" you, haven't met you, I can guess you are someone who is disgusted with the idea of disposable pens. And you have a lot to say about it. Obviously, you are eco conscious, so we can relate. Oh--and I too usually have a lot to say. But I wonder if it goes deeper than this for you: Do you struggle with expressing yourself (especially through writing)? Is this creation an avenue by which you express what you cannot in words? Or, do you place light behind pens because you are illuminating the world with what cannot be expressed in words?

As some have supposed, I certainly don't think you intended to be seen as a pen benefactor; otherwise, I would directly ask you to support my husbands incessant need for pens because you seem to have an unending supply. And, I however, do not. But this would be selfish of me to want to see my own pens safely back in their peaceful resting place. And, afterall, how do they even know if there is ink in any of these pens? Or that you aren't just a Bicophile? ;)

I was recently hit by an SUV that ran a stop sign while bicycling to my job at an environmental nonprofit. The damage wasn't too bad, but I'm hoping that I've got some good karma coming my way, considering that the gas-guzzling guy took off and my bike is busted.

I would love it if my karma points came in the form of a beautiful recycled lamp to brighten my cheap apartment. This chandelier would be an awesome reminder that being green can be both functional and beautiful and doesn't usually involve eating pavement. It can illuminate the artwork I'm going to make out of my bicycle parts and crutches!

The beauty of this chandelier only grows as you observe it more carefully. The use of disposable items to create something new adds a deeper, inspiring awe to this piece. It wouldn't just replace an old lamp, it would prevent the need to consume the new materials to satisfy our desire for design. It represents the purest form of recycling while artfully drawing attention to the beautiful form of everyday objects, reminding us that beauty and innovation is about more than a carbon footprint. I try to do what I can for the environment by turning off electronics when I am not using them, composting materials whenever possible and recycling things I no longer need. It pains me every time I see a piece of furniture out on the street, being ruined by the weather instead of being donated to another family. I am an owner of a lot of used clothes and second-hand furniture. While I can afford to buy new, I think recycling is important so new materials aren’t wasted.

This lamp would be gorgeous addition to my hand-me-down and craigslist-stocked apartment. I am not a design student, an environmental expert or architecture - I am just a regular person trying to do all that I can and encourage others to take the small steps to create a better world. What I can say is that this lamp would be a focal point in my dining room, a source for inspiration and discussion. It would be loved and appreciated for years and years to come. This chandelier is a beautiful piece and represents that waste is what we make of it - we have the ability to work together and create something beautiful instead of adding to the to the problem.

I am an artist and anxious to get involved with eco-art. I need this Chandelier to prove to my cynic husband that using items that would otherwise be viewed as trash for the dump can be re-created to make beautiful items worthy to be called ART!

I remember the first time I saw the Bic Pen Chandelier. It was in a daily news letter from this website (2007). I was working on my senior project for school. I used it as the center piece for my project, redesigning a tattoo studio using green products. My biggest reason for using the chandelier was one; it’s probably the coolest thing ever and two, bic pens are oddly enough my favorite pen to use. Either way this was an inspiration for me. I don’t care if I win this, all I have to say is that as long as I have been receiving e-mails from Inhabitat.com I can honestly say that they have inspired me to be a better person and a better designer. Thank you and please continue to keep sharing with the world.

Brilliant idea! Literally and figuratively.
As a writer, this is marvelous, but as a human who avoids disposable pens as though they were infectious, it's a splendid silent reminder - even a rebuke - about thoughtless, every day wastefulness. It looks as though the quality of light it emits is charming and life-enhancing.
Cheers to the creativity that turned waste into treasure.

Hi There,

I'd like this lamp, since it's been 8 years I've had and have been moving around my IKEA lamp, with I think will fall apart next time I try to move it.

Well, my husband and I just moved to New York from Canada. I'm an Interior Designer who loves green design and had to sell all of my wonderful finds just scrounge up enough money to get to new york and follow our dreams. We've been trying to move to nyc for 3 years now, and winning this would mean so much, it would be our first piece in our apartment, aside from our bed (the one piece of furniture that we have right now). I wrote a little haiku poem to summarize:

Following our dreams
No furniture to our name
Please light up our lives

Thanks so much for the chance!

I love BIC pens and I love beautiful designs. I love my planet so I love recycling. And what a beautiful way to combine those things ;) I've been looking for a chandelier for a long time now but I haven't found anything I like enough untill now. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy one since I'm finally having a baby after 7 years of trying. So it would be great to win this one. ;)

Btw I used BIC pens to decorate my brother's gift for his confirmation ;)

I am a recycler from way back. This would be a testament to the Green way on how one can use everyday materials and turn them into useful items. I would be able show my Grandson each time he visits this wonderful chandelier and the meaning behind it.

I am a designer and so I don´t have allot of money to spend on beautiful things like this awesome light. I bought a fantastic dining table for 12 people but I really need a light over it. Now I just use candles, romantic but not awesome all the time.

I wold love to have this light over my dining table.

Flicker light, flicker bright, will you light up my house tonight? I love your re-usability, it’s sensibility. You will be used, instead of abused. Eco friendly, will you befriend me? I NEED you, you NEED me, we NEED green to have a clean scene. Please come home, to finish mama’s poem.
