Maia Anthea Marinelli’s Wind Playground [1] is an interactive kinetic sculpture that allows people to play with and understand wind [2]in a creative way. Based on the fundamentals of the Venturi effect [3], Wind Playground funnels wind into a maze of tunnels, accelerating the wind and creating wind-microcosms. While the installation interacts with local wind patterns, visitors can walk through the sculpture, playing and sliding on the textured sail material that surrounds them, experiencing the thrill of being blown away by the wind.

As the audience walks through the massive 57′ by 65′ and 18′ tall multicolored sculpture, there are four tunnels, all of which greatly accelerate wind, naturally. Just as a sail is positioned relative to the wind, here visitors can alter the effect based on where they’re positioned in the sculpture, and the amount of people participating. Built using sail making techniques – with the same material as windsurf or kite sail – Wind Playground works like a sail.
