The City of Windsor’s new Fire Station just achieved LEED Gold Certification , ensuring a healthy and productive work environment for the city’s firefighters. The new fire station exceeds baseline ASHRAE performance by 30%, generates 15.3% of its energy on-site through renewable sources, and features ample daylighting and views in all interior spaces. During construction more than 80% of the waste was diverted, and a bio-swale drainage retention system was implemented, along with water-efficient landscaping, water conserving fixtures, and dedicated bicycle storage.
The site’s extensive solar photovoltaic array is mounted on the carport canopy, providing shade to cars left vacant while firefighters are out protecting citizens. Designed by Beverly Prior Architects , the Windsor Fire Station has also been named an Outstanding Engineering Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers – San Francisco Section . Additional supporting spaces built into the station include a fitness room, equipment storage, turnout gear storage, laundry facilities, office/work areas and a medical clean-up area.
