In a freshly released report on Tuesday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stated that 2000-2009 was the warmest decade ever on record. While the WMO has warned the world about this dire situation before, this new analysis further confirms the urgency and need for us to take action. The agency’s findings arrived in time to counteract the scrutiny of global warming deniers who have been increasingly more vocal as the COP15 conference to fight the effects of climate change commenced in Copenhagen.

In addition to the confirmation that this decade has been the warmest ever, the WMO predicted that 2009 will most likely be amongst the top ten warmest years in the history of a 160 year record. At a news conference at the COP15 talks this week, Michel Jarraud, the secretary general of the WMO said: The period from 2000 through 2009 has been “warmer than the 1990s, which were warmer than the 1980s, and so on.” He added that although the data is not yet complete for 2009, there is a strong indication that it will be the fifth warmest year on record to date.
