With Valentine’s Day [1] approaching, wouldn’t it be nice to escape for a few days with your loved one and relax in pampered luxury – without feeling guilty about the huge footprint you are adding to the environment? The world class conservation-based Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa [2] in the Blue Mountains, located just a 1.5 hour drive south of Sydney, Australia will provide you with luxury AND a guilt-free carbon-neutral [3] experience! It’s the first hotel in the world to achieve international carbon neutral certification through carboNZero [4], so you are in for quite a treat.

Nestled at the foot of towering sandstone escarpments in the Great Diving Range, The Wolgan Valley Resort [2]is a sight to behold. The stunning resort is constructed from a mix of hardwood timbers recycled from local rail bridges, fallen timber, old fencing posts, timber sourced from renewable sources [5], and local stone. Upturned root balls have even been strategically placed in surrounding paddocks to act as natural sculptures on the landscape.

Green building principles combined with solar power [6] and heat recovery help reduce the resort’s energy use. Although a small quantity of carbon credits [7] were purchased initially, it is anticipated this will only be necessary for the first few years of operation as further emission reduction programmes [8]are implemented and re-vegetation of the area continues. So far over 175,000 indigenous trees have been planted, and when they mature they will help absorb more carbon dioxide. All of the resort’s buildings are fitted with energy-efficient light bulbs, have their own rainwater tanks and all water used at the resort is recycled. All food at the Resort is also sourced from suppliers within a 100 mile radius, further cutting down on transportation emissions and supporting local industry.

In its first 18 months of operation The Wolgan Valley Resort [2]has already received numerous prestigious Awards. It won the Australian Hotel of the Year Award 2010, took out 3 categories of the 2010 Australian Timber Design Awards including Commercial Sustainable Design, and was recognized for their Commitment to Excellence at the 2010 The Leading Hotels of the World Awards.

That makes it a winner all-around in our book.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The Wolgan Valley Resort is the world’s first hotel to be certified carbon-neutral by carboNZero [4].
