Gallery: Wooden Shoal Bay Bach is a Sweet Minimalist Retreat in New Zea...

By definition, a bach is a simple holiday house in New Zealand.
By definition, a bach is a simple holiday house in New Zealand.

Comprised of two interconnected gabled structures in a paddock backed by rolling green hills, the Shoal Bay bach is located in a new development complex that used to be an old sheep farm. In fact, Parsonson minimalistic design was inspired by a nearby woolshed that is no longer in use. There’s just one bathroom for the whole family and the home is lifted off the ground, which expands interior space while providing a great area to collect kayaks and other recreational accouterments.

Concerned with sustainability, the family asked to make their holiday bach as eco-friendly as possible. Consequently, it was built with responsibly-sourced timber, the water is heated by the sun, and a low emission wood-fired stove keeps the home warm. Louvers diffuse daylight and manage solar gain, and a pocket of other clever interventions maximize space and a sense of continuity with South Hawkes Bay.
