If you’re heading to New York City [3] next year, or if you live here and haven’t been out to the Statue of Liberty, you’re in for a green surprise. A new ferry is set to hit the waves of New York Harbor next spring and it runs on hydrogen fuel cells (with a little help from a low-emission diesel engine, solar [4] panels and wind turbines [5]). The 1,400-horsepower Hornblower Hybrid will be capable of shuttling 600 passengers and will incorporate recycled glass counter tops, LEED certified carpeting and low VOC paints throughout. It looks like this ferry puts its green cred where we can see it.

The Hornblower Hybrid [7] is a result of a multimillion dollar agreement between Statue Cruises [2] and Derecktor Shipyards [8] in Bridgeport, CT to create the world’s first hydrogen powered hybrid ferry. “By combining hydrogen, solar and wind power, Hornblower will minimize its environmental impact as we transport guests to popular national landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island,” said Terry MacRae, CEO of Statue Cruises. “Our goal is to reduce emissions to the greatest extent possible, with a goal in the future to eliminate them entirely during a cruising day.”

The New York Hornblower Hybrid will come three years after the launch of the San Francisco Hornblower Hybrid [9] — the first hybrid ferry in the US which runs on solar, wind, low-emission diesel and electricity from the grid. Both vessels were created by San Francisco-based Hornblower Cruises & Events which also operates Statue Cruises. The company says that their Hornblower technology [10] is now scalable to other hybrid ferries, hybrid yachts and even hybrid tugs and hopes that their new ferry innovation will spread around the industry. Though there are diesel engines on board, officials from Hornblower are saying that they’re just there for backup and hopefully won’t have to be used other than in the case of an emergency.
