I agree that private automobiles aren't the greenest mode of transportation. But, the first vehicle that parks with Canopy will be a Tesla (I talked to the guy...) that will drive home charged on Colorado sunshine and wind.

That's very green, low emissions, and carbon neutral.

Part of the purpose of Canopy is change the current reality that private autos aren't green. Most private cars currently pollute, but they don't have to. No, we won't change the world all by ourselves. We'll need help from everyone!

There's an engineer in California who covered his roof in PV panels and converted his Prius to a plug-in, which doubles as a energy storage device. He's a net energy exporter, zero emissions, and carbon negative (running his meter backwards means that he's causing others to burn less coal). It's an expensive set up, but much of the cost relates to his home being a one-of-a-kind demonstration project. Mass produced, it could be practical - and greener than a light rail running off coal-fired electricity.

At Canopy, we are trying to be part of a future that will include green personal transportation. People won't buy plug-ins if they can't charge them at a restaurant, a mall, and, yes, an airport.

\"that driving 15+ miles in order to park in a \"green\" lot is in fact green.\"

Many DIA visitors drive several hundred miles from remote rural locations to park at the airport - a light rail line isn\'t practical (nor, given the effects of construction, green) to Lusk, Wyoming, Sturgis, South Dakota, or Goodland, Kansas (all within the DIA service area).

They\'ll need to park somewhere.

I find it amazing that DIA will have a \'green\' parking lot before it completes its light rail line. Now I realize that this is a private lot and I applaud the owners\' sustainable efforts; however I don\'t consider it to be a success. A true success would be to build a normal parking lot closer to Denver and devote the \'greening\' money to building the light rail line faster. But, Denver is a sprawling city that bows to the automobile. Therefore, maybe I shouldnt expect too much and I should agree that driving 15+ miles in order to park in a \'green\' lot is in fact green.

This is a complete failure, the worlds greenest parking lot does not exist, because it shouldn't exist.

By providing space to park, people are only encouraged to drive. Instead of carpooling or taking transit. It's ridiculous to say that ANY parking lot is green, no matter how much green LEED things you attach to it.

The way to lower emissions and be truly environmental is to discourage driving in the first place, this means fewer parking spaces, and more efficient transit.

Stop rewarding people for using their cars, and start rewarding the people that don't.

Point of Clarification: Canopy Airport Parking is actually a privately-owned off-airport parking facility that serves Denver International Airport. Canopy Airport Parking is located just outside of airport property, on Tower Road just north of Pena.

The Canopy project is a cooperative venture of Greenscape Capital and Propark America - it's designed as a practical "proof-of-concept" to demostrate that airport parking lots can be more energy efficient and reduce their environmental impact. Greenscape and Propark intend to apply the knowledge gained at Canopy to other parking facilities. Canopy is specifically designed to use a broad array of different green technologies (for example, there are three types of alternative power used on the buses: CNG, Biodiesel, and Hybrid). In this way, the experience gained at Canopy by Propark and Greenscape will apply to almost any parking facility, and be relevant, regardless of which green technologies emerge as superior.

Canopy is also designed to prove that individual transporation doesn't have to be bad for the environment. Plug-in Hybirds and Electric Vehicles that recharge using electricity generated on-site with solar panels and wind turbines are driving home with zero emissions, carbon neutrality, and complete sustainability. And, Canopy will let them recharge for free, so their zero fuel cost to the parking customer!

Canopy is currently projected to open for business on November 24th, 2010.
