Gallery: Wrecords by Monkey: Repurposed Vinyl Jewelry

With a distinct urban and rock ‘n roll feel, Brooklyn-based Wrecords by Monkey creates unique handmade accessories using reclaimed vinyl records. The company, made up of friends Patrick Chirico and Brian Farrell, was started in 2004 when the two started to make jewelry in their dorm hallway at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Their first and signature product, the Wrecord bracelet, ranges in styles from quirky to sophisticated– some even glow in the dark! Today, the duo’s work has come to include bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and t-shirts– all eco-chic items for the music lover.

Instead of letting unwanted or damaged records go to waste, Wrecords collects vinyl from DJs and distributors– taking post-consumer back stock that is either scratched or warped. Since 2004, Wrecords has released several collections of bracelets and more recently expanded into creating other accessories in collections including Music is the Key, Off the Train, Classic Patterns, Heritage, City Life, and Native American. A recent collection, NYC Artist Collection, represents a roster of 12 New York City artists including graphic designers, photographers, graffiti artists and fine artists. The collection is designed to help the selected urban artists while also encouraging young talent with 45 percent of the profits going to the artists, and 10 percent going to art and music programs in Brooklyn schools.

The NYC Artist Collection is not the only way Wrecords gives back, however, Patrick and Brian have spoken at colleges about entrepreneurship and innovative materials in the past, and continue to be involved with charitable organizations and philanthropic ventures including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, LIFEbeat, and the S.T.O.K.E.D. Foundation.
