Sustainable gadgets are making waves again at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show [2] in Las Vegas. Last year, Goal Zero wowed CES attendees with its Yeti 1250, a solar energy generator that’s robust enough to run your refrigerator while the power is out. This year, the company¬†unveiled the Yeti 150 [3], a portable, plug-and-play solar generator that still packs an impressive punch without the nasty exhaust fumes.

In emergency situations, it’s not necessary to power an entire household of appliances. All most people want are the essentials, like a light, a phone, and possibly a laptop or GPS. For these light-duty survival situations, the Yeti 150′s compact size [5] and 12-pound weight are ideal. According to company specs, the device’s Nomad 13 solar panel collects a full charge with between 5 and 10 hours of direct exposure to sunlight. That amount of energy will light a lantern for 50 hours, power a smartphone for 15 hours, and recharge your laptop…twice.

The Yeti 150 could also come in handy for those who like to live off the grid or spend extended periods of time in the back country as well. Its easy to carry design makes it practical for base camp and when there’s no sun, it can also be charged up using a wall outlet or vehicle battery.

The Yeti 150 isn’t yet available, but should debut later this year with a price tag of around $400.
