Yong Ho Ji's Stirring Sculptures are Crafted from Layers of Recycled Tires
From afar, the sculptures are surprisingly realistic, until a closer look reveals that what you thought was a horse-like figure, in fact has the tail of a chicken and stands on cows legs. The artist playfully reconstructs sci-fi type characters as opposed to reconstructing realism in his works.
Although the tires are not necessarily the subject of the sculptures, their weight and uneven texture accentuate the grotesque forms. The sculptor molds the industrial material over a welded iron or wooden frame, compacted with soil, to portray the delicate intricacies of an animal while giving way to a new, inanimate being. Various types of tire – motorcycle tires, bicycle tires, and tractor tires – are also used to create differing muscles and muscle tension, or to give each sculpture the effect of skin or fur.
