Yukihiro Kaneuchi Creates Elegant Vases Using Sand From the Beach

Japanese designer Yukihiro Kaneuchi [4]recently unveiled a series of sculptural vases made from local sand. Dubbed Sand Vases, the four flower-container designs consist of a mix of crystals, renewable cork and sand from a nearby beach, all bound using waterproof resin. Elegantly shaped, they are the result of an exploration into typologies combined with Japanese games and architectural traditions. [5]
Kaneuchi’s sculptural vases were inspired by Bou-Taoshi, [6] a kids’ game consisting of finding tree branches hidden within the sand [7] dunes. But the game itself is said to be inspired by a Japanese tradition of making conic sand dunes next to some temples, representing divinity and the mountains. Beautiful, elegant and sculptural, Kaneuchi’s Sand Vases are a celebration of Japanese traditions and long-lasting design.
