Magically appearing from the trees along Great Ocean Road, Australia is Cocoon ^[4], an incredible weekend getaway by the terrific design duo Bellemo & Cat ^[4]. One part zeppelin ^[5], one part finely-crafted yacht ^[6], Cocoon was conceived as a “a matchbox inside an egg, a rectangle within an oval.”

Great green designs can take as many forms as there are minds to imagine them. Cocoon ^[4] is a terrific example of taking architectural cues from the landscape; it rests lightly on the land and preserves much of the original feel of the surrounding environment. “The light weight monocoque structure is a hybrid of techniques appropriated from boat building and aircraft engineering,” say Bellemo & Cat ^[4], “The path to building this home was one of unleashing the pragmatic inside the poetic.”

Simultaneously fantastical and minimal with an eye to living lightly on the land, Cocoon ^[4] is evocative of Bellemo & Cat ^[4]‘s public art pieces at Harbour Esplanade, Docklands, Victoria and their sculpture work, particularly 2Cocoon ^[7] and Polywarp ^[7] which was a finalist for the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award.
