Heralded as one of the first zero-energy, zero-carbon commercial buildings in the US, the IDeAs Z2 Design Facility is located in a formerly windowless bank that has been transformed into a light-filled eco-friendly space. Designed to produce more electric energy than it uses, the building’s harvests the sun’s rays with a massive rooftop-mounted photovoltaic system. A collaboration between EHDD Architecture, mechanical engineers Integral Group, general contractor Hillhouse Construction and IDEAS, this inspired renovation turned a 1960’s concrete cube into a relaxing, spacious office.

The building’s main means of heating and cooling is a ground-source heat pump that is driven by the building’s photovoltaic power source. This system produces both chilled water and hot water and helps lower energy use to help the building meet its net zero goals. Daylight floods in through the skylights to light up all the workspaces.

When the building opened, IDeAs hosted the release of the City of San José’s comprehensive 15-year plan for conserving energy, combating climate change, and securing Silicon Valley’s position as the nation’s green tech innovation center. The facility was honored by Mayor Chuck Reed as a model project demonstrating how to realize such ambitious goals.
