After nearly three decades of acting, Leonardo DiCaprio went on stage to accept his first Oscar for Best Actor, and the audience exploded with applaud. With millions of people around the world watching, he then used his short time slot to point out how he and the rest of the movie crew had to travel to the southern tip of the world “just to find snow” – thanks to climate change.

Earlier this year at the Golden Globes, he gave a similar speech, in which he also defends the rights of indigenous people displaced by greedy corporations and corrupt governments.

“Climate change is real, it is happening right now,” he said. “It’s the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together.”
