If you’re sick of your Ikea furniture because everyone in the world has the same thing, don’t kick it to the curb just yet. A few cool companies like Swedish PrettyPegs and Bemz offer accessories like add-on legs and custom covers that allow you to upgrade those ubiquitous sofas and chairs and make them look more unique. Of course, customization might not be cheap, but then again, it’s cheaper than a new couch!
Ikea keeps its prices low because it only offers you a few options, which is great for those of us who don’t care about custom design or uniqueness and ikea-hacking has become quite common, but takes some effort and creativity. Luckily, a number of companies are popping up to give our Ikea furniture new life. First up is PrettyPegs, which sells swanky legs for Ikea couches and beds. Like shoes for your furniture, PrettyPegs has 11 different styles in a wide range of colors from midcentury modern to contemporary styles. Prices for 4 pegs range from €78-€130 and ship from Sweden.
Bemz is another custom Ikea outfitter, which specializes in covers for sofas, chairs and beds. Started by Lesley Pennington, who saw the market for custom covers as a expression of one’s style. The company offers a huge range of textiles that can be handmade into covers for every piece of Ikea furniture. Bemz uses 100% natural textiles, although we wish they offered an organic line, which would make this deal even sweeter. Sofa covers aren’t cheap though and cost anywhere from $200 to $600, but then again a really nice custom sofa would cost even more.
