Bentley is known for producing large powerful luxury vehicles, but they aren’t very “green.” Well, that’s about to change with the debut of the Bentley Hybrid Concept, which previews the plug-in hybrid technology that will be offered in the automaker’s upcoming SUV in 2017.

Bentley predicts that its new plug-in hybrid system will not only offer a power increase of up to 25 percent over its current engines, but will also have a 70 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. The plug-in hybrid system will also be able to drive up to 31 miles on electric power alone.

“There is no doubt that plug-in hybrid technology is true to Bentley’s values of outstanding luxury and effortless performance. Combining our renowned engines with electric power reinforces and enhances both principles, and so we will gradually introduce this powertrain across our model range. By the end of the decade, at least 90% of our production will be available as a plug-in hybrid. We are proud to be pioneering these developments in the luxury sector.”

The Bentley Hybrid Concept is being showcased in the automaker’s flagship Mulsanne sedan and will have its world debut later this month at the Beijing Motor Show. Bentley will likely reveal more specs about the plug-in hybrid system at the show.
