The World Car of the Year Awards were given out today at the 2014 New York Auto Show, and the BMW i3 electric car was crowned the Green Car Of The Year and the Car Design Of The Year. The BMW i3 beat out the Audi A3 and the VW XL1 in the green car category, and the Mazda3 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the design category.

“To have the BMW i3 named World Green Car of the Year is a great honor. From the production process onwards, the BMW i3 is a truly sustainable vehicle, created with the needs of the 21st century city in mind,” stated BMW’s Dr. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

The World Green Car judges praised the BMW i3: “Radical in looks, construction, and powertrain, the BMW i3 is one of very few clean-sheet-of-paper cars designed from the ground up for efficiency, with the different needs of the new century’s mega cities in mind.” The BMW i3 is the first vehicle from BMW’s new electric i-sub brand. It starts at $41,350 for the fully electric version, while a range extended version starts at $45,200.
