BMW originally unveiled the i8 Concept Spyder at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, but since then all the news has focused on the 2015 i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid sports car (which is slated to arrive next spring). Now it’s being reported that BMW has given the green light to the i8 Spyder with the production version expected to arrive by the end of 2015.
Sources say that BMW’s executives were shown a production version of the i8 Spyder last week and gave it the official go last Friday. We haven’t seen the production version that was shown, but it was painted in “Solar Orange” with blue accents. The production version is expected to remain very close to the concept version, but with some styling updates that will mirror the 2015 i8 Coupe.
Even though the i8 Spyder will look slightly different than the coupe, thanks to its open top design, everything under the hood will be identical. The i8 Spyder will be powered by the same 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine and electric motor as the coupe. With a combined output of 362 horsepower, the i8 Coupe reaches 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and can travel up to 22 miles in electric mode.
The 2015 i8 Coupe arrives in the spring with a starting price of $135,925. If the reports are true, it shouldn’t be too long until we see the production version of the i8 Spyder.
