After years of development BMW just unveiled the official production model of its 2015 i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show! The i8’s efficient, yet powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain generates a total of 362 horsepower and 320 lb-ft. of torque, giving the vehicle enough zip to reach 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds. However even with its sports car specs, the i8 gets a very efficient fuel economy rating of 94 mpg on the EU cycle. The BMW i8 is set to hit the market next spring with a price tag of $135,925.

The long-awaited BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car is powered by a 1.5L three-cylinder engine with 231 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque. The three-cylinder turbocharged engine sends its power to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. An electric motor with 131 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque gives the i8 all-wheel-drive, since it sends its power to the front wheels. The i8 can also travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone and can be recharged in as little as 1.5 hours.
The 2015 BMW i8 will arrive in the U.S. in spring 2014 with a price tag starting at $135,925.
