Glowing Schilthorn Transforms an Old Coffee Pot Into a Lamp by

Gilles Eichenbaum has made an art out of recycling old kitchenware into incredible lighting. The designer is a true craftsman who repurposes everything from colanders to kettles to broken toasters to create illuminating masterpieces. His work originally manifested itself as a hobby he picked up while traveling the world, but it wasn’t until he began selling the pieces at local flea markets, where they were met with a fervent reception, did he know he was doing something really special.

I love how Gilles transposed a delicate lace-like aesthetic onto an object that is generally quite heavy – the end result is playful and certainly eyecatching!

Thanks to you all for your sokind comments.

I chose to compete with this model as an example of half vintage half design upcycling. This glowing coffee pot, coming from a flea market, is entirely handmade. It is as aesthetic lit as lifeless, moreover no need to use it in a black room because produced effect is as visible in broad daylight as in a normally lit ambience. On practical plan, the bulb is deliberately located at the top not to dazzle. Feet refine the general aspect of the object and allow, underneath, a central exit of the wire so that the lamp can be orientated the its prefered side without restraint.

Although many of the lamps made from recycled plastic were lovely, I think it is more healthful not to have heated plastic in your living space, and better not to create plastic beverage bottles at all.

I chose this lamp because it is magical and durable, and the designer seems to have considered all practical concerns about lighting design very carefully.

While I loved several of the designs, I just had to vote for this one. I tend to agree that, while the plastic bottle lamps are lovely and do keep them from the landfill, the idea they would be continuing to outgas makes me shy away from them.

More than that however, is that I appreciate the way this takes objects once beloved and makes them beautiful and relevant once again. Poetic, indeed.
