Reinier de Jong just launched a new scaled-down version of his brilliant expanding REK Bookcase. The bookcase is made of poplar plywood sourced from sustainably managed forests in Europe, and it’s able to gradually expand to accomodate a growing collection of books. The Dutch designer decided to create a smaller bookcase suitable for small spaces when it was time for his toddler son to have his own shelf.

The REK Original and the REK Junior are simple, modern bookshelves with strong square forms that easily adapt to any room. Each section of the shelving units can be shifted over to expand the shelve’s available room. This gives the transformable piece of furniture a much longer lifespan, since it can be used to hold more and more books as the years go by.

The plywood is finished with an organic linseed oil wax to make the green furniture last and last. Check out more about Reinier’s cool designs at his official website.
