Artist Michael, who also goes by Moerkey, sees ordinary objects, such as keys, coins and wire, as potential for unconventional pieces of art. Items typically viewed as throw-away are given new life in his collection of lights, bowls and other household objects.
Using found materials in new and innovative ways seems to come naturally to Moerkey, as he describes being inspired by items found in his shed, such as copper pipe, which he cut into rings and fused together to create a sphere. “I’m a bit of a hoarder and searched around for all those old keys and copper wire, that were no longer needed, and got creative with them as well. I’ve progressed from making spheres, to footballs and bowls as well as angles and brooches,” he explains.
Some of his creations require a second glance, as they are shaped so skillfully that one might not notice the media used in the piece. Stylish bowls created from coins, along with his other pieces, can be purchased at his Etsy shop, which already displays a disclaimer about the high demand for his products. Also found there are lighted globes, football sculptures, wine goblets, and stunning mosaics of the female form.
