We are used to seeing humans getting their hands on nature, so it's refreshing to see flora and fauna reclaim the land when they can. Finnish photographer Kai Fagerström captures cheeky wild animals squatting in abandoned houses in his atmospheric collection of images entitled The House in the Woods. Don't miss the surreal images after the break, and discover badgers, squirrels, foxes, owls and voles making themselves comfortable in true Animal Farm style!
The House in the Woods is a unique collection of photographs that captures wild animals making themselves comfortable in a few abandoned houses. The tenants left the collection of homes empty after the owner of the properties died in a fire. Award-winning Finnish photographer Fagerström discovered what was really happening inside while having a stroll in the woods surrounding his own summer cottage.
After years of being empty, the shabby houses were slowly re-appropriated by local wildlife. In a series of snapshots, which now make up a book, Fagerström has captured some cute and furry inhabitants, including badgers, squirrels, foxes, owls, and voles.
The photographer says of his own work and why he is enchanted by his finds: “Deserted buildings are so full of contradictions… I am fascinated by the way nature reclaims spaces that were, essentially, only ever on loan to humans.”
