This winter riding through one of the city’s seven bridges or tunnels will be a more musical, multi-sensory experience. The bridges and two tunnels, which are overseen by the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) will soon be outfitted with lights, and will blink in synch with coordinating music. While such creative place-making projects are increasingly funded and implemented in recent years throughout the United States and the world, Governor Cuomo has said that this project is unique and on a larger scale than any other to date.
LED lights will be used for the Crossings Project. LED lights are more energy efficient than regular lights, so not only will the choreographed light project bring a new visual and sound experience to crossing the bridge, but it will also be more eco-friendly. The bridges are expected to be lit up later this month.
“We’re illuminating all the bridges in New York City with different-colored lights, and the bridges can then be coordinated and choreographed to music,” Cuomo said. “So literally, you’ll have bridges all across the New York City area that are choreographed — nothing like this have been done on the planet.”
