Maggie’s provide emotional, practical and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. The centers are located in architecturally striking buildings within the grounds of NHS hospitals. Architects who have worked with Maggie’s in the past include Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers and Frank Gehry.

Resource consumption at Maggie’s Nottingham is minimized by linking to NHS waste systems for more efficient recycling and disposal. The building is highly insulated and low maintenance to minimize lifetime costs and energy use. It is naturally cross-ventilated with the stack effect via the central roof-light. Air source heat-pumps are used for heating and hot-water. Rainwater is collected in the roof’s drainage system and stored in the water tank in the basement. This water is used within the centre to flush the toilets.
