The City of Tamarac, Florida, seeks an artist, designer or team to envision unique public benches for use throughout the city located west of Fort Lauderdale and adjacent to the Everglades. The benches must be affordable and durable in a sub-tropical climate with hurricanes and help to create a unique sense of place. A $20,000 fee will be paid to design both a covered and open bench and prepare fabrication documents. The winning selection will be based on recent work, resume and references, and if requested, an in-person presentation. Submissions are due July 9, 2013.

The total artist fee established for the Tamarac Public Bench Design Call to Artists design project is $20,000. The budget includes all costs: i.e. research, community meetings, agency coordination, design drawings and/or maquette, fabrication documents and specifications, review of fabrication, photography, proposals, travel, sales tax, and transportation. A future contract up to a value of $60,000 may be awarded to the selected artist for fabrication, delivery and installation the benches.


The Tamarac Public Bench Design Call to Artists is open to all North American professional artists, designers and teams with experience in implementing projects and working in the public arena with public agencies. Artist must be able to effectively work within the project timeline and collaborate with the engineers, general contractors, multiple governmental agencies, community groups, City staff, fabricators and the Public Art Committee whenever it is required. Producers and manufacturers of commercial benches are not eligible, but may team with an artist or designer.
