With vacancy rates hovering around 1% and an average rental rate ringing in at $3,459, adequate housing is out of the reach for millions of NYC’s inhabitants. The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is inviting developers to submit proposals for a new housing construction project located in Kips Bay, Manhattan. Currently, the city’s housing stock is misaligned with its changing demographics; there are 1.8 million one- and two-person households (more than 60 percent of New York City households) and only one million studios and one-bedrooms to meet this housing demand. The adAPT NYC competition is seeking to create additional choice within New York City’s housing market to meet this need. All interested architects, designers, planners and inspired individuals are invited to enter. Submissions are due September 14, 2012.
