New York City has lost more people to AIDS than anywhere else in the country. Despite the hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in NYC who have been affected by the disease, no significant AIDS memorial exists to honor and recognize all those lost, or to celebrate the heroic efforts of those who have responded to the crisis. This year, the AIDS Memorial Park has teamed up with Architectural Record and Architizer to host a design competition for a park, memorial, and small educational center in NYC’s West Village, across from the now-shuttered St. Vincent’s Hospital. The trio is welcoming designs that provide a much-needed inspirational, educational and green public oasis for the city and surrounding community, and one that also pays respect to the historic site and those impacted by AIDS. A 10-member jury of esteemed architects, critics, artists, activists, and others will evaluate the submissions. The first place winner will receive $5,000, a runner-up will receive $2,000, and select entries will be exhibited in a gallery show. The deadline to register is January 20, 2012.
