Here at Inhabitat, we love art and furniture made from reclaimed or recycled materials, which is why we’re excited to share the Design by Nature’s sustainable design competition for sculptural installations, public art, and functional furniture. Although pieces of all shapes and sizes will be considered, the designs must contain at least 50% existing, reclaimed or recycled materials and should be designed to move easily between locations. The selected finalists will have their work displayed on the Evergreen Brick Works campus. There will be one $3,000 prize for the Best of Show winner, four $1,000 prizes for the finalists, and four $500 for additional winners.

Prizes are $3000 (1), $1500 (4), $500 (4). Plus, all selected finalists will receive $100 credit at Restore's in the GTA.

Pieces appropriate to both interior and exterior application are encouraged, should be designed to move easily between locations and withstand the rigors of an unsupervised public environment. Any size or piece will be considered. However, keep in mind the location and scale, and public nature of the installation sites. All proposed designs must contain at least 50% existing, reclaimed, or recycled materials. These materials must be non-virgin, with some previous use or purpose, and/or materials destined for landfill or waste had they not been used in the submission. This year we encourage, but do not limit, artists to use “resource-based” materials. This includes city wood from the ice storm, materials from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and architectural salvage left on the streets and shared via Trashswag.

Stay tuned...the 2014 jury will be announced shortly.
