Want to make your mark on deep space exploration? Here’s your chance: NASA and America Makes have teamed up to launch the 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge, a new $2.25 million competition that seeks a 3D-printed habitat for journeys to Mars and beyond. Created as part of NASA’s Centennial Challenges program, the design/build competition is split into multiple phases, the first of which asks participants to develop architectural design concepts. After the winning designs have been selected in September, the competition will then advance to the research and development level, which will “focus on technologies needed to manufacture the parts of the habitat from a combination of recycled and indigenous materials,” and the fabrication phase, where contestants will construct a full-scale habitat using simulated indigenous materials and/or recyclables. Each level will offer a prize of $1.1 million. Registration for the first phase ends July 15, 2015. The submission deadline is August 3, 2015.
