Barren Island, once home to horse rendering plants and fish oil factories in the 19th century, is now a part of the Gateway Recreation Area, a place filled with thousands of artifacts, left behind when a landfill was established in the 1950s. Now, the park draws year-round explorers and amateur historians, searching the beach for buried treasure.
Howard Warren is one of the city’s foremost experts on the area. On June 14 at Metropolitan Exchange, he will be discussing the site’s history and politics, as well the lessons he’s learned through his collaborative investigation efforts of the site.
