Dekalb Market is a joint venture of Urban Space (who has built similar shipping container markets elsewhere), and Youngwoo and Associates. It is the product of an immense amount of community effort, and the whole market is constructed entirely of salvaged 160-square foot shipping containers. The market consists of a dozen food vendors, more than a dozen local shops and artisans, a radio station, and an incubator farm.
Each of the vendors and the radio station will be set up in their own container, which they had free reign to decorate and outfit. Visitors will enjoy Cuzin’s Duzin cookies and doughnuts, Joe the Art of Coffee, Filipino food from Maharlika, healthy soul food from Mazie’s Bites, Nile Valley Juice & Sandwiches, Robicelli’s cupcakes, Sour Puss Pickles, and more. The local designers and purveyors include Daga Antiques, the Pratt Design Incubator and Yakblak Specs & Sunnies, just to name a few. The small farm will be run by a slew of Inhabitat favorites, including Brooklyn Grange and 3rd Ward, and on the weekend, there will be additional vendors selling in a pop-up market of tents around the containers.
