Land artist Walter Di Maria’s Earth Room has been stationed in Soho since 1977. Supported by the Dia Foundation, Earth Room is roughly 250 cubic meters of dirt — the same dirt that has been there since its inception. The space is closed in summers for cleaning, and because the humidity promotes spores. You can’t walk around in the dirt, but you can stick your head in the room, and feel the calming stillness it creates while in the middle of New York’s shopping mecca.
