The Museum of the City of New York is dedicated to exploring and preserving the heritage of New York City’s diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. The museum houses nearly 1.5 million items related to the Big Apple’s history, with permanent galleries dedicated to historic toys, trade and the city’s role as the port of The New World, fire-fighting techniques, Broadway theater memorabilia, and period rooms. Temporary exhibitions explore topics ranging from a single institution, like the Apollo Theater, or a widespread issue, like the struggle against HIV/AIDS. The museum hosts an abundance of educational programs and speakers relating to current city issues, and the gift shop has the best New York-themed souvenirs in the city.
